Atlanta, GA: Homemade Indian Snack

I wake up in the morning at Smruti's house to find her mom busy preparing an authentic Indian lunch. What a treat! Look at this spread!!

I've eaten a lot of Indian food but I've never seen this before. This is a kind of Indian snack (chaat) called bhel. Smruti's mom helps prepare my dish.

There's cereal-like stuff on the bottom (puris?) covered with potatoes, black chickpeas, a red sauce (tamarind/date chutney?), a green sauce (cilantro/mint chutney?), a yogurt sauce and then topped with a little fresh cilantro and crunchy sev (looks like ramen). After I mixed everything, I then promptly doused this concoction with spicy sriracha sauce (aka rooster sauce). Smruti's mom is wide-eyed at how much I like spice.

A little pureed corn with TONS of spice. Really yummy but I can only take a little at a time. It's like Indian creamed corn, Smruti says.

Next, Smruti's mom shows me how to enjoy the bhel in a little piece of puffed rice (muri?).

Here we go! Yum! Bite sized goodness!

Indian food wasn't quite what I expected to have in Atlanta but it was a welcome break from BBQ. Thanks Smruti and extra special thanks to Smruti's mom! Yay! Who knew making a friend in Paris would result in a pit stop in Atlanta for Indian food? Now that's a charmed life!
