Lynchburg, TN: Jack Daniel's Distillery

I left Atlanta after pho lunch with Smruti and headed to Nashville. Entering Tennessee! The highway goes back into Georgia and then back into Tennessee so I got some extra state sign love!

I'm not sure what I expected Tennessee landscape to look like but probably not like this. It's actually really beautiful.

And then there was the billboard...Jack Daniel's Distillery! It was late in the day. I could either go visit the Parthenon in Nashville or the distillery but not both. Ah screw it! I just saw the real Parthenon in Athens. Jack Daniel's Distillery it is! Wha-hoo!

50 mile detour later, I arrived.

Entering the gates

I was here!

They douse these piles of wood with Jack Daniel's and then burn them. The resulting charcoal is used for what is called 'charcoal mellowing', where the distilled whiskey is dripped through 10 ft of charcoal to leach out any impurities and, some argue, impart flavor.

Never know when you'll need a fire brigade at a distillery. On the right is a picture of the natural spring water which is why the distillery was built here and the supposed secret ingredient to great whiskey.

A statue of Mr. Jack Daniel himself. He was only 5'2" but this statue is five inches taller. The next picture is in Mr. Jack's office (one of the only original buildings still standing). It was this actual safe that Mr. Jack kicked one morning which resulted in a foot infection that eventually killed him. Bad luck.

Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed inside the any of the production buildings. You'll just have to visit yourself for a full tour! Also, Lynchburg is located in a dry county so no whiskey tasting. Interestingly, they passed a special law so that you can buy some Jack Daniel's at the distillery but only in this little tiny room. Even the gift shop is located downtown. Not really sure why.
