As soon I walked in, I also immediately noticed an Asian family sitting in the corner! A-ha! Friendlies! (At this point, Gary is already embarrassed by my Asian picture taking tendencies...)
The waitress came by and asked us what we wanted to drink. Gary said, "Sweet tea" and I quickly followed with, "What's that?" I think Gary turned a few shades of red before he looked at the waitress and said, "She's just kidding. She'll have sweet tea too." Hilarious! And folks, there she is, my very first sweet tea.
The food came pretty quickly. OMG, perfectly hickory smoked BBQ with a light vinagery tasting sauce. Lots of hickory smoke flavor but not as tender as I thought it would be. Good, nonetheless. Really good cole slaw and to die for hush puppies. Fried okra too.
Apparently eastern and western North Carolina have very different styles of BBQ - something having to do with whether ketchup is added to the sauce or not and what part of the pig they use. Here's a good article summarizing some of the differences and reviews of a few of the author's favorites.
And finally, a close up of Gar-Bear! He hasn't cut his hair since we went to Paris (end of December 2009) and in addition, has not shaved since returning to the US (beginning of June 2010). I think he looks like one of those cavemen from the Geico ads.
Me and all my food - sweet tea, BBQ and fried okra!
We finished it up with a slice of sweet potato pie, warmed with a dollop of fresh whipped cream! A fantastic ending to a fantastic meal.
